Eine Reihe aus dem ConBook Verlag, nennt sich „151“. Was steckt dahinter, habe ich mich gefragt und beim Verlag ein Ansichtsexemplar bestellt. Da uns schon immer Kanada interessiert hat und wir dort auch schon einmal unterwegs waren, haben ich mich für den Reisebildband „Kanada 151“ entschieden. Die Zahl 151 bezieht sich dabei auf die Anzahl der Momentaufnahmen in der die Autorin ein Porträt des entsprechenden Landes vorstellt. Zu Beginn werfen wir erst einmal wieder einen Blick auf den Klappentext.

Kanada 151 ist eine einzigartige Dokumentation über ein Land, das alles bietet, von der Halbwüste bis zum ewigen Schnee. Erleben Sie eine Gesellschaft, die stolz ist auf ihr Mosaik verschiedener Kulturen und die trotz (extremer) Weite im Herzen nah beieinander steht. Ein Buch für Entdecker und Liebhaber Kanadas und diejenigen, die es werden wollen.
Das Buch umfasst 282 Seiten in Fadenheftung. Aufgrund der kompakten Abmessungen liegt es gut in der Hand. Das Front- und Backcover lässt sich bei Bedarf ausklappen und als Lesezeichen einsetzen. Auf dem Cover befindet sich ein Foto mit einem atemberaubenden Blick in die kanadische Natur. Im Buch selbst befinden sich über 160 weitere Fotos. Auf der Rückseite des Buches findet sich der oben erwähnte Klappentext.
Zu Beginn wird die Autorin vorgestellt. Sie war zum ersten Mal 1995 in Kanada und hat damals Vancouver besucht. Sie hat sich sofort ein die grandiose Natur und der Weite des Landes verliebt. Wie jedoch stellt man ein Land in 151 Momentaufnahme vor? Das kann nur subjektiv geschehen, was die Autorin aber gut hinbekommen. Inhaltlich sind die Momentaufnahmen in alphabetischer Reihenfolge, von A wie „Abenteuer“ bis Z wie „Zimtschnecke“, sortiert. Diese findet man aufgelistet auf einer Doppelseite. Die Überschriften sind nicht immer sehr aussagekräftig. Klar kann man sich unter „Halifax“, „Toronto“, „Bären“ und „Thanksgiving“ was vorstellen. Bei den Begriffen „Adirondack Chair“, „Snowbirds“, „Pete´s Farm“ oder „Hanging Baskets“ musste ich ehrlich gesagt passen.
Die einzelnen Momentaufnahmen sind unterschiedlich aufgebaut. Mal findet sich ein Text auf einer kompletten Seite. Dann auch nur auf einer halben Seite. Zu jedem Thema gibt es dann noch ein Foto. Hier wurde mir nun auch klar, warum über „Momentaufnahmen“ gesprochen wird. Es ist nur ein kurzer knapper Eindruck in die Thematik. Es finden sich geschichtliche Daten, kulturelle Informationen, touristische Highlights, soziale Hintergründe, Verhaltensregeln (z.B. zum Rauchen oder Trinkgeld), Reiseempfehlungen und viele andere nützliche Hinweise und Kurzgeschichten. Wenn man das Land nicht kennt, bekommt man hier einen kompakten ersten Eindruck.
Das Buch ist kein Reiseführer, wie man ihn sich für die Vorbereitung eines Urlaubs zulegen würde. Es versucht vielmehr einen „Blick hinter die Kulissen“ des fabelhaften Landes und dessen Menschen zu werfen. Ich würde es mir vor einer geplanten Reise ansehen, um mich auf das Land einzulassen und zu erahnen, was mich erwartet. Vielleicht würde ich auch den ein oder anderen Tipp merken und einen Besuch planen.
Leider fehlen mir die Informationen, wann die Autorin Ihre Erfahrungen zu den einzelnen Momentaufnahmen gemacht hat. So beschreibt Sie unter „Gletscher“ auf Seite 90 den Athabasca Gletscher zwischen Banff und Jasper. Hier schreibt sie, dass man den Gletscher nicht ohne Begleitung betreten dürfe. Als wir 2003 dort waren, konnte man von einem unterhalb des Gletschers gelegenen Parkplatzes, den Gletscher betreten und musste nicht mit den wirklich kolossalen Fahrzeugen eine Tour buchen. Am Ende des Buches fehlt mir persönlich ein Register, wo ich schnell mal nach einem Begriff suchen könnte.

Infos zur Autorin:
Annegret Heinold hat Germanistik, Pädagogik und Naturwissenschaften in Hamburg studiert, ehe sie nach Portugal gezogen ist. Dort hat sie zwanzig Jahre lang ein Gästehaus und Seminarzentrum im Alentejo geleitet. Seit 2005 schreibt sie als freie Autorin Geschichten und Romane sowie Reisereportagen und Reisebücher und lebt abwechselnd in Nordportugal und Kanada.
An Portugal fasziniert sie die große Geschichte des kleinen Landes am Rande Europas, die genussvolle Esskultur und die Gelassenheit und Hilfsbereitschaft der Menschen. Kanada hingegen liebt sie wegen der grandiosen Natur, der Weite des Landes und der Großzügigkeit seiner Bewohner.
»Heimat ist da, wo man sich wohlfühlt und Freunde hat«, antwortet sie, wenn sie mal wieder jemand fragt, wo ihre Heimat ist.

A series from the ConBook publishing house called „151“. What’s behind it, I asked myself and ordered a sample copy from the publisher. Since we have always been interested in Canada and we have also been there once on the road, I have decided for the travel book „Canada 151“. The number 151 refers to the number of snapshots in which the author presents a portrait of the corresponding country. To begin with, let’s take another look at the blurb.
The book has 282 pages in thread stitching. Due to its compact dimensions, it fits well in the hand. The front and back cover can be folded out and used as a bookmark if necessary. On the cover is a photo with a breathtaking view of Canadian nature. Inside the book are over 160 other photos. On the back of the book is the blurb mentioned above.
At the beginning the author is introduced. She was in Canada for the first time in 1995 and visited Vancouver at that time. She immediately fell in love with the magnificent nature and the vastness of the country. But how do you present a country in 151 snapshots? This can only be done subjectively, which the author manages well. In terms of content, the snapshots are sorted in alphabetical order, from A for „adventure“ to Z for „cinnamon bun.“ These can be found listed on a double page spread. The headings are not always very meaningful. Of course one can imagine something under „Halifax“, „Toronto“, „Bears“ and „Thanksgiving“. With the terms „Adirondack Chair“, „Snowbirds“, „Pete’s Farm“ or „Hanging Baskets“ I had to pass honestly.
The individual snapshots are structured differently. Sometimes there is a text on a complete page. Then also only on a half page. For each topic there is then another photo. Here it became clear to me now, why about „snapshots“ is spoken. It is only a short short impression into the topic. There are historical data, cultural information, tourist highlights, social backgrounds, rules of conduct (e.g. on smoking or tipping), travel recommendations and many other useful tips and short stories. If you don’t know the country, you will get a compact first impression here.
The book is not a travel guide as one would buy to prepare for a vacation. Rather, it attempts to provide a „behind the scenes“ look at this fabulous country and its people. I would look at it before a planned trip to get involved with the country and get an idea of what to expect. Perhaps I would also note a tip or two and plan a visit.
Unfortunately, I lack the information when the author made your experiences to the individual snapshots. So she describes under „Glacier“ on page 90 the Athabasca Glacier between Banff and Jasper. Here she writes that one may not enter the glacier without company. When we were there in 2003, one could enter the glacier from a parking lot located below the glacier and did not have to book a tour with the really colossal vehicles. At the end of the book I personally miss a register, where I could quickly times search for a term.

Annegret Heinold studied German, education and natural sciences in Hamburg before moving to Portugal. There she managed a guesthouse and seminar center in the Alentejo for twenty years. Since 2005 she has been writing stories and novels as well as travel reports and travel books as a freelance author and lives alternately in northern Portugal and Canada.
What fascinates her about Portugal is the great history of the small country on the edge of Europe, the enjoyable food culture and the serenity and helpfulness of the people. Canada, on the other hand, she loves for its magnificent nature, the vastness of the country and the generosity of its people.
„Home is where you feel comfortable and have friends,“ she replies when someone asks her again where her home is.
Today she lives on a small vineyard in northern Portugal, and works as a freelance writer specializing in Canada and Portugal. In addition to articles for magazines, she writes non-fiction, novels and short stories, as well as the monthly column for „Discover Algarve“ magazine.
