Das vor mir liegende Taschenbuch hat 430 Seiten und ausklappbare Cover, die man als Lesezeichen nutzen kann. Es ist relativ „dick“ und liegt bei Lesen nicht immer gut in der Hand. Die Schriftform ist gut zu lesen. Eingeführt wird man mit einem Prolog, gefolgt von drei Haupt-„Teilen“. Diese wiederum haben einzelne Kapitel, welche numerisch durchgezählt sind und eine Überschrift tragen. Auf dem Frontcover findet sich im vertikalen Druck der Buchtitel. Rechts und links davon sind je eine Person dargestellt. Zum einen eine Frau im Profil und ein anzutragender Mann mit einer Pistole in der Hand. Auf der Rückseite findet sich die Inhaltsangabe und die oft zu findenden Empfehlungen. Auf dem ausklappbaren Rückcover ist ein Foto des Autors und ein paar Informationen zu ihm. Vorne steht noch ein wenig, als nur in der kurzen Inhaltsangabe zu finden ist.
Das Buch hat drei Teile. Jedes dieser Teile hat circa 15 Kapitel mit einer kurzen prägnanten Überschrift. Der Schreibstiel ist flüssig, jedoch mit vielen technischen Begriffen und Beschreibungen bestückt. Einige dieser Begriffe werden erklärt. Wenn man mehr darüber wissen will, muss man schon ein Lexikon zur Hand nehmen oder im Internet recherchieren. Ein Kapitel mit entsprechenden Erläuterungen findet man leider nicht, hätte dem Buch aber gutgetan.
Die Geschichte spielt in einer nicht näher beschriebenen Zukunft und wird aus Sicht von zwei Protagonisten erzählt. Da wäre zum einen die CIA-Analystin Quint Mitchell und dem Auftragskiller mit dem Namen Ranveer. Eben noch hat sie noch erfolgreich dabei geholfen Anschläge zu verhindern, wird sie in ein Team aufgenommen, welches eigenartige Todesfälle aufklären soll. Ihre Fähigkeiten als talentierte Analystin sollen dabei helfen, die auf den Opfern hinterlassenen Zahlencodes zu dekodieren und damit den Mörder ausfindig zu machen. Doch was hat es mit diesen Morden auf sich und welches Geheimnis steckt hinter diesem Zahlencodes?
Ich habe eine ganze Weile gebraucht, mich auf das Buch und dessen Geschichte einzulassen. Es ist ein Science-Fiction-Thriller der besonderen Art. Von Kapitel zu Kapitel lernt der Leser die Protagonisten näher kennen. Dazu wird immer wieder ein Blick in deren Vergangenheit geworfen und man kann sich immer besser in sie hineinversetzen. Alles passt hier gut zusammen, bis hin zum Finale.
Christian Cantrell hat einen interessanten Science-Fiction-Thriller zu Papier gebracht. Neben dem Katz- und Maus-Spiel lebt der Thriller durch die Protagonisten und deren Geschichten. Vielleicht habe ich auch deswegen ein wenig Zeit gebraucht, mich darauf einzulassen. Das Buch hat mich nicht vom Hocker gehauen, verspricht aber ein paar nette kurzweilige Stunden.

Norbert Stöbe, 1953 in Troisdorf geboren, begann schon als Chemiestudent zu schreiben. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Chemiker am Institut Textilchemie und Makromolekulare Chemie der RWTH Aachen übersetzte er die ersten Bücher. Sein Roman New York ist himmlisch wurde mit dem C. Bertelsmann Förderpreis und dem Kurd-Lasswitz-Preis ausgezeichnet. Seine Erzählung Der Durst der Stadt erhielt den Kurd-Lasswitz-Preis und die Kurzgeschichte Zehn Punkte den Deutschen Science Fiction Preis. Zu seinen weiteren bekannten Romanen zählen Spielzeit, Namenlos und Der Weg nach unten. Norbert Stöbe ist einer der bekanntesten deutschen Science-Fiction-Schriftsteller. Er lebt als freier Autor und Übersetzer in Stolberg.

The paperback in front of me has 430 pages and fold-out covers that can be used as bookmarks. It is relatively „thick“ and does not always feel good in the hand when reading. The typeface is easy to read. One is introduced with a prologue followed by three main „parts“. These in turn have individual chapters, which are numbered consecutively and have a heading. The book title is printed vertically on the front cover. To the right and left of it, one person each is depicted. One is a woman in profile and the other a man with a pistol in his hand. On the back is a summary of the book’s contents and the recommendations that can often be found. On the fold-out back cover is a photo of the author and some information about him. At the front there is a little more than can be found in the short synopsis.
The book has three parts. Each of these parts has about 15 chapters with a short, concise heading. The writing style is fluent, but with many technical terms and descriptions. Some of these terms are explained. If you want to know more about them, you have to consult a dictionary or do some research on the internet. Unfortunately, there is no chapter with corresponding explanations, but this would have done the book good.
The story takes place in an unspecified future and is told from the point of view of two protagonists. On the one hand, there is the CIA analyst Quint Mitchell and the contract killer named Ranveer. Just a moment ago, she was successfully helping to prevent attacks, but now she is taken into a team that is supposed to solve strange deaths. Her skills as a talented analyst are to help decode the numerical codes left on the victims and thus track down the killer. But what is it about these murders and what is the secret behind these number codes?
It took me a while to get into the book and its story. It is a science fiction thriller of a special kind. From chapter to chapter, the reader gets to know the protagonists better. In addition, a look into their past is taken again and again and you can put yourself in their shoes better and better. Everything fits together well here, right up to the finale.
Christian Cantrell has put an interesting science fiction thriller on paper. Besides the cat and mouse game, the thriller lives through the protagonists and their stories. Maybe that’s why it took me a little time to get into it. The book didn’t knock my socks off, but it promises a few entertaining hours.
