Ich muss erst mal „Wow“ sagen. So einen Atlas habe ich schon lange nicht mehr in Händen gehalten. Neben seinem Gewicht hat er auch ein entsprechendes Format. Er erinnert mich an die alten Schulatlanten, ist aber wesentlich umfangreicher gestaltet. Aber der Reihe nach. Das es sich nicht nur im einem einfachen Atlas handelt, verrät schon der Klappentext.

Orientieren, schmökern, staunen – In diesem aktualisierten Nachschlagewerk werden mittels detaillierter Kartografie und informativer Texte zu den jeweils regional verorteten Landschaftsreliefs die Strukturen unseres Planeten auf besonders ansprechende Weise präsentiert. Eine umfangreiche Legende zu den zahlreich positionierten Icons in den Karten ermöglicht eine schnelle Orientierung zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten auf allen Kontinenten. Die anschließenden Sonderkapitel zu den Rekorden der Welt überzeugen in Wort und Bild, das Wissen einfach Spaß machen kann.
Der vor mir liegende Atlas wiegt allein schon einmal ca. 5,1 kg. Mit seinen Abmessungen von 26.5 cm x 37.5 cm x 5 cm, umfasst er 600 Seiten. Geliefert wird der Atlas in einem praktischen stabilen Schutzkarton. Die Bindung ist ebenso hochwertig, wie der Druck. Der Atlas hat noch mal ein Schutzcover aus Papier. Auf dem Karton, dem Schutzumschlag und dem Buchdeckel findet man die gleichen Bilder und Text. Alles ist schwarz gehalten und soll den Eindruck vermitteln, aus dem Weltall auf die dargestellte Erde zu blicken. Neben dem Titel findet man den Hinweis auf die Sonderkapitel „Die Rekorde der Natur“ und „Die Rekorde der Menschheit“, auf die im Folgenden noch eingehen werde. Auf der Rückseite findet man noch einmal einen informativen Hinweistext zu den Inhalten. Auf den Innenseiten des Schutzcovers findet sich der Bildnachweis der Coverbilder und ein ansprechendes Zitat von Kurt Tucholsky:
„Die größte Sehenswürdigkeit, die es gibt, ist die Welt – sieh sie dir an.“
Was ich leider vermisse, ist ein praktisches Leseband. Wenn Sie den Atlas verschenken sollten, würde ich auch ein Lesezeichen verschenken.
Auf den ersten Seiten findet man schon einmal ein paar beeindruckende Fotos und ein Vorwort des Verlags. Weiter geht es dann mit den Inhaltsangaben der einzelnen Kapitel. Der Atlas Teil ist nach den Kontinenten sortiert und den einzelnen Ländern und liefert neben der Seitenzahl auch den Kartenmaßstab der enthaltenen Karten. Dann folgt die Übersicht zur „Welt der Rekorde“, welche wiederum nach Rekorden der Natur und der Menschheit in der antiken und modernen Welt untergliedert sind. Da es sich auch um einen Altas handelt, findet man noch eine Kartenübersicht, eine Zeichenübersicht zu geografischen Strukturen und zur Welt des Reisens. Auf den letzten gut 100 Seiten gibt es noch ein ausführliches Namenverzeichnis und einen Bildnachweis. Die Fotos stammen von bekannten großen Image Anbietern: Alamy, Mauritius-Images, Getty-Images und Corbi. Der Bildbestand des letztgenannten Anbieters wurde von Getty übernommen. Im Bildnachweis sind einzig die Namen der Fotografen genannt. Wer also näheres zu den Fotografen in Erfahrung bringen möchte, muss hier ein wenig Recherchearbeit betreiben.
Die ersten 300 Seiten werden vom Atlas-Teil gebildet. Zu den einzelnen Kontinenten gehört immer physische und politische Karte. Es gibt aber auch zwei Doppelseiten mit der physischen und geografischen Karte der Welt. Die Karten sind im Atlas-Teil das beherrschende Element. Im oberen Abschnitt finden sich dann die Informationen, die man aus jedem Atlas kennt. Dazu gehört unter anderem die Staaten und Flaggen, Länder- oder Staatengrößen, geografische Daten, große Städte und noch einiges mehr. Die einzelnen Kontinente werden immer mit einer Doppelseite von Fotos eingeleitet. Eine kleine Grafik der Erdkugel und dem farblich hervorgehobenen Teil des Kontinents, hilft bei der Zuordnung.
Auf den nächsten ca. 150 Seiten findet sich „Die Welt der Rekorde“ gegliedert nach „Natur“ und „Menschheit“ in der antiken und modernen Welt. Meiner Meinung nach ist genau dieser Teil am interessantesten und hat mich sehr beeindruckt. Angefangen mit der Lage der Erde im Sonnensystem wird hier ein Blick auf alle geografischen Abschnitte geworfen. Alles aufzulisten ist einfach zu viel. Ich möchte kurz auf den Aufbau anhand des Themas „Korallen, Korallenriffe und Atolle“ eingehen. Neben einleitenden Worten findet sich eine Auflistung der größten Korallenriffe und Atolle auf der Erde mit Angabe der Quadratmeterzahl und der Lokalisation. Wo im Atlas-Teil noch die Karten im Mittelpunkt standen, sind hier die Fotos als „Eye-Catcher“ im Mittelpunkt. Beim Durchblättern bin ich aus dem Staunen nicht herausgekommen. Wie soll es erst Kindern und Jugendlichen gehen, die sich durch die Seiten blättern. Klar bekommt man auch schon viele Informationen aus dem Internet, aber einen Atlas in Händen zu halten, ist da noch mal eine andere Hausnummer. Wenn man dann zum Teil der Rekorde der Menschheit geht, wird aber auch klar, was der Mensch mit der Natur gemacht hat. Ob alles immer so toll ist, mag jeder für sich entscheiden.
Was bleibt zusammenfassend zu sagen? Wie zu Beginn schon geschrieben, hat sich bei mir erst einmal ein „Wow“-Effekt eingestellt. Ich hatte nicht mit diesem Format und dem Gewicht gerechnet. Den Atlas legt man sich nicht einfach auf dem Schoß und blättert ihn durch. Ich habe mich an unseren Tisch gesetzt und die Seite staunend betrachtet. Die Kombination zwischen Atlas und den Rekorden hat mich besonders angesprochen. Das anfangs zu findende Zitat von Kurt Tucholsky trifft hier genau ins Schwarze „… die Welt – sieh sie dir an“! Unsere Jungs hatten den Atlas auch schon in Händen und haben ihn mit großem Interesse durchgeblättert. Sie waren einstimmig der Meinung, dass sie ihn sicherlich für die ein oder andere Hausaufgabe oder Thematik in der Schule nutzen würden. Auch wenn der Preis recht hoch ist, so finde ich ihn dennoch angemessen. Lassen auch sie sich beeindrucken!

I have to say „wow“ first. I haven’t held an atlas like this in my hands for a long time. Besides its weight, it also has an appropriate format. It reminds me of the old school atlases, but it is much more comprehensive. But first things first. The blurb already tells us that this is not just a simple atlas.
Blurb:
Orientate, browse, marvel – In this updated reference work, the structures of our planet are presented in a particularly appealing way by means of detailed cartography and informative texts on the respective regionally located landscape reliefs. An extensive legend to the numerous icons positioned in the maps enables quick orientation to the sights on all continents. The subsequent special chapters on the world’s records are convincing in words and pictures that knowledge can simply be fun.
The atlas in front of me alone weighs about 5.1 kg. With its dimensions of 26.5 cm x 37.5 cm x 5 cm, it comprises 600 pages. The atlas is delivered in a practical, sturdy protective box. The binding is of the same high quality as the printing. The atlas also has a protective paper cover. The same pictures and text can be found on the cardboard, the dust jacket and the book cover. Everything is black and is meant to give the impression of looking at the depicted earth from outer space. Next to the title, there is a reference to the special chapters „Nature’s Records“ and „Mankind’s Records“, which I will discuss below. On the back cover you will find another informative text about the contents. On the inside of the protective cover, you will find the picture credits for the cover images and an appealing quote by Kurt Tucholsky:
„The greatest sight there is is the world – look at it.“
What I miss, unfortunately, is a handy ribbon bookmark. If you were to give the atlas as a gift, I would also give a bookmark.
On the first pages you will find some impressive photos and a foreword by the publisher. Then it continues with the table of contents of the individual chapters. The atlas section is sorted by continent and individual country and provides not only the page number but also the map scale of the maps included. This is followed by the overview of the „World of Records“, which is again subdivided according to records of nature and mankind in the ancient and modern world. Since this is also an Altas, there is also a map overview, a character overview of geographical structures and the world of travel. On the last 100 pages there is a detailed index of names and a picture credits. The photos come from well-known large image providers: Alamy, Mauritius-Images, Getty-Images and Corbi. The image stock of the latter provider was taken over by Getty. Only the names of the photographers are mentioned in the image credits. So if you want to find out more about the photographers, you will have to do a little research.
The first 300 pages are made up of the atlas section. Each continent is accompanied by a physical and political map. However, there are also two double pages with the physical and geographical map of the world. The maps are the dominant element in the atlas section. The upper section then contains the information familiar from any atlas. This includes the states and flags, sizes of countries or states, geographical data, large cities and much more. The individual continents are always introduced with a double page of photos. A small graphic of the globe and the part of the continent highlighted in colour helps with the assignment.
The next approx. 150 pages contain „The World of Records“ divided into „Nature“ and „Mankind“ in the ancient and modern world. In my opinion, it is precisely this part that is most interesting and impressed me very much. Starting with the position of the earth in the solar system, a look is taken at all geographical sections. To list everything is simply too much. I would like to briefly discuss the structure based on the topic of „corals, coral reefs and atolls“. In addition to introductory words, there is a list of the largest coral reefs and atolls on earth with the number of square metres and the location. Whereas in the atlas section the maps were still the focus, here the photos are the „eye-catchers“. I couldn’t help but be amazed as I leafed through the book. How will children and young people feel when they flip through the pages? Sure, you can get a lot of information from the internet, but holding an atlas in your hands is another matter. If you then go to the part of the records of mankind, it also becomes clear what man has done to nature. Whether everything is always so great is something everyone can decide for themselves.
What can be said in summary? As I wrote at the beginning, I first had a „wow“ effect. I had not expected this format and weight. You don’t just put the atlas on your lap and leaf through it. I sat down at our table and looked at the page in amazement. The combination between the atlas and the records particularly appealed to me. The quote from Kurt Tucholsky found at the beginning hits the mark here „… the world – look at it“! Our boys have already had the atlas in their hands and have leafed through it with great interest. They were unanimous in their opinion that they would certainly use it for one or two homework assignments or topics at school. Even though the price is quite high, I think it is reasonable. Let them be impressed too!
